British boxing star who fought Tyson warns of Jake Paul’s ‘circus’ fight
As one of the few men to have faced Mike Tyson in his prime, Julius Francis knows all too well the raw strength of the “baddest man on the planet” who once dominated the boxing ring.
But with Iron Mike set to pull the strings in the early hours of Saturday at ATT Stadium – home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys – the former British and Commonwealth champion is raising the alarm about the potential dangers. Despite the age of 58, watching Tyson train for his fight against YouTuber Jake Paul, his legendary skill and conditioning remains. However, Julius, who lost to the American icon in January 2000, fears Tyson may no longer be able to hold his own against a man 31 years his junior.
“He’s dangerous. We all know what Mike Tyson is and was. I see videos where he looks very fit, strong and alert. He looks good for a 58-year-old, but you have to remember, he’s 58. He’ll get in the ring with someone who he’s more than 30 years younger,” he said. Julius, who has fought four world champions, explained that age and experience only sometimes guarantee success in the ring.“We must remember that, as a man, your manly strength is acquired in your thirties. As you approach your thirties, especially as a heavyweight boxer, this lasts for 10-15 years. Beyond that, it diminishes over the course of of years. Time waits for no one, not even Mike,” the 59-year-old said.
