Chad Posthumus, the first player to sign a contract with the Winnipeg basketball team, is in critical condition after a brain aneurysm.
The 33-year-old Sea Bears player suffered a brain aneurysm Saturday during practice. He was initially admitted to hospital in stable condition, according to an Instagram post from the Winnipeg basketball team.
Chad Posthumus underwent surgery to treat the aneurysm, but complications
have occurred, and the player is now in critical condition in intensive care unit
the Sea Bears said Thursday morning on Instagram.
A local hero
The player is a local hero. He was born and raised in Winnipeg and played high school basketball for the River East Collegiate Kodiaks. He also played with the Canadian national team and was a member of the Ottawa BlackJacks and Saskatchewan Rattlers before returning to Winnipeg to play with the Sea Bears.
Last season, the player appeared in 19 of the Sea Bears’ 20 regular season games. He averaged 5.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game in his second season with the Canadian Elite Basketball League team.
He helped Winnipeg qualify for the playoffs for a second straight season, but the Sea Bears lost 84-82 to the Calgary Surge in a play-in game.
At a Manitoba Home Builders Association event on the state of housing in the province Thursday, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew expressed sadness and offered prayers for Posthumus and his loved ones.
Chad is an excellent local product from here. We are very proud of him and wish him and his family good luck
he declared.
