As one of the few men to face Mike Tyson in his prime, Julius Francis knows all too well the strength of the “baddest man on the planet” who once dominated the boxing ring.
But as Iron Mike prepares to pull the strings early Saturday at ATT Stadium – home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys – the former British and Commonwealth champion is sounding the alarm about the potential dangers. Despite being 58 years old, watching Tyson train for his fight against YouTuber Jake Paul, his legendary skills and conditioning remain. However, Julius, who lost to the American icon in January 2000, fears Tyson will no longer be able to hold his own against a man 31 years his junior.
“It’s dangerous. We all know what Mike Tyson is and was. I see videos where he looks very fit, strong and sharp. He looks good for a 58 man years old, but you have to remember that he is 58 years old. He will step into the ring with someone who is more than 30 years younger,” he said. Julius, who has fought four world champions, explained that age and experience only sometimes guarantee success in the ring.“We have to remember that as a man, you become virile in your thirties. As you approach your thirties, especially as a heavyweight boxer, this lasts for 10 to 15 years. Beyond that, it diminishes with years. Time waits for no one, not even Mike,” the 59-year-old said.
