Tyson vs Jake Paul match attracts attention from all over the world… Netflix sports broadcasting begins in earnest > Seattle News/Hot Issue

“Boxing matches that were aired on HBO are now moved to Netflix.”

Reuters reported on the 15th that Netflix is starting to monetize sports broadcasting through the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul to be held on the 16th (Korean time).

The match between 58-year-old legendary nuclear fist Tyson and 27-year-old YouTuber Paul with 20 million views will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA. The stadium can accommodate 80,000 spectators.

This match, which can be viewed by all 280 million Netflix subscribers, will be held six years after HBO, a broadcaster synonymous with boxing matches, gave up boxing broadcasting rights in 2018. Reuters predicted that this could be a welcome change for American boxing fans who are used to watching boxing matches on HBO.

This boxing match broadcast is one of Netflix’s strategies to increase advertising users through exclusive sports content. The number of users on Netflix’s ad-inclusive plan is growing rapidly, from 40 million last May to about 70 million currently.

“The current trend in all sports is to move broadcasting rights for some events (from existing broadcasters) to streaming services,” veteran sports marketing analyst Bob Dorfman said in a Reuters interview.

Starting in 2021, Amazon Prime will pay $1 billion annually to the National Football League (NFL) and broadcast American football every Thursday night, and Apple TV will also sign a 10-year broadcasting rights worth $2.5 billion with the National Football League (MLS) in 2022. A contract was signed.
