Bundesliga: Christian Ilzer becomes the new coach at Hoffenheim

The Austrian Christian Ilzer takes over as coach at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The Bundesliga soccer team announced this. The 47-year-old comes from Austrian champions Sturm Graz.

Ilzer succeeds Pellegrino Matarazzo. TSG parted ways with him on Monday with immediate effect.

“I know and appreciate Christian through our collaboration and am convinced that he is the coach who ideally fits the idea that I have in mind for TSG Hoffenheim,” said sports director Andreas Schicker. Until October he was still working with Ilzer in Graz.

Ilzer should take Hoffenheim from 15th place in the table

Several things were crucial for Ilzer’s decision to leave Graz early and move to Kraichgau, including working with Schicker. “After turbulent days, I’m now really looking forward to the new challenge and can’t wait to get to know the players and staff,” he said.

The separation from Matarazzo, who had held the coaching position since February 2023, came as no surprise. Hoffenheim are only in 15th place in the Bundesliga with nine points from ten games. The appearances in the Europa League were also bumpy with only one win in four games.
