This Saturday, November 16, the Cine Coliseo de Baena will be the setting for the 1st “Woman and Cinema” Conference, a pioneering event in the city that explores the role of women in the film industry and its multiple perspectives. Organized by the Antigua Librería-Papelería Cañete Association in collaboration with the research groups “History, theory and analysis of cinema” (HUM-1090) and “Languages” (HUM-224) of the University of Córdoba, the event is directed by the teachers Ana Melendo Cruz and María Paz Cepedello Moreno. The conference will feature the participation of renowned film figures, such as Valeria Camporesi, director of the Spanish Film Library, Pilar Monsell, filmmaker, and María Zafra, director of the Barcelona International Dones Film Festival. With the support of the Baena City Council and the Córdoba Provincial Council, the event promises to be a platform for dialogue about the impact and contributions of women in cinema.
The event will begin at 9:30, where after the presentation of the conference, an opening conference will take place by Valeria Camporesi. Next, María Paz Cepedello will offer a presentation titled “Autobiographical construction in women’s cinema: Maternal genealogy and identity”, exploring how the cinematographic narrative constructed by women reflects their experiences and strengthens female identity.
The day will include a breakfast for attendees at Casa del Monte before resuming activities with two more conferences. María Zafra will present “Women’s cinema is cinema”, a reflection on cinema made by women as a unique artistic expression and social representation. Ana Melendo, for her part, will analyze “Woman as an element of persuasion in agricultural documentaries”, a topic that explores how agricultural documentaries in Europe have used the female figure as a persuasive resource in their messages.
The programming will continue at 2:30 p.m. with the screening of the film Africa 815by Pilar Monsell, who will also be present to discuss the theme of her work in a subsequent colloquium. The film delves into issues of identity, family and sexual orientation, reflecting the event’s commitment to exploring social and personal themes. During the colloquium, the public will have the opportunity to interact with Monsell, as well as with three film specialists: Pedro Poyato, Pedro Mantas and Ana Melendi
The event, with free admission, invites the citizens of Baena and surrounding areas to enjoy an enriching day with a lasting cultural impact on the community.
The Cañete Bookstore, as organizer, highlights its desire to promote a cultural tradition that transcends this first event and lays the foundations for future editions. In addition to the conference, an exhibition of 29 women artists from Córdoba is open at the Antigua Cañete Bookstore, which will remain available every weekend as part of the “Women in the Arts” cycle.
