“A player who knew how to win the affection of others and had a tireless will to learn and participate in this sport,” reads the statement from the entity that brings together table tennis players in the province. Lionel had gone to bathe with some friends in the water canal

Around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, several calls to 911 alerted a person who could not leave the Cacique Guaymallén canalat the intersection of the Costanera side with Montecaseros Street, in the department of Godoy Cruz.

The neighbors and passersby in the area also despaired at the cries for help of Lionel’s friends, who had gone with him to bathe in the water channel. And they saw that the teenager was drowning.

According to witnesses at the scene, the young man had been dragged by the current of water and it would have gotten stuck in one of the floodgates of the channel.
