Bidasoa Irun did not allow itself to be surprised by Guadalajara and won 37-27 in the match on matchday nine. The equality of the Asobal League and the option of one from the bottom surprising one of the greats was not reflected this Friday in Artaleku, where the competition resumed after the break for the national team matches.

Thanks to the two points added this Friday, the Irundarras slept in fourth position, which they could lose today depending on the result of the match between Ademar and Nava, since they are tied with the Toledo team and with one point more than the Leon team.

The meeting had an added interest to see in action the two Polish players who belong to Bidasoa Irun and are on loan to the La Mancha team. The pivot Jakub Sladkowski, who last year played in yellow, was discreet – the previous day he had entered the ideal seven – and his statistics show a goal from one attempt, while the center back Piotr Mierczalski showed signs of his quality, with five goals (from seven shots), one assist and two turnovers.

The 1-3 was a mirage

Bidasoa Irun started a little timid and Guadalajara took advantage of it to take a 1-3 lead, including a goal from Mielczarski. It was a mirage, because immediately the local team began to take control of the situation. Maciel’s support in goal was key at the start of the comeback, as he had a 50% accuracy rate in the 10th minute, with four interventions, including one from the penalty spot.

  • Every five minutes:
    2-3, 6-4, 9-6, 12-6, 15-9, 16-11 (rest); 19-14, 23-14, 26-16, 30-19, 34-23 and 37-27.

  • Referees:
Antonio Javier García and José Antonio Huertas, who excluded the locals Jevtic and Boskos and the visitors Dorado (twice) and Román.

From 1-3 it went to 7-4 including four counterattack goals. And the difference did not get worse because the visiting goalkeeper, Lantz, was also inspired. He had already made six stops before the quarter-hour mark and went to half-time with nine, the same as Maciel.

They were two of the protagonists of a first half in which the game was very close to breaking down. A partial 4-0 put the score at 12-6 and forced the visiting timeout, which had an effect, because Guadalajara managed to stop the momentum of its host and ensure that the difference on the scoreboard did not get any bigger, reaching the break with 16-11. Five goals are not a few, but for a moment it seemed that Bidasoa could reach halftime with its homework done.

Upon returning from the locker room, the yellow team did not lower its intensity and in a few minutes surpassed the ten-point lead.

He did them in the second half, in which the passing of the minutes showed the real difference between the current runner-up and a newly promoted team. And the Gipuzkoan side was missing the injured Iñaki Cavero and Eneko Furundarena, plus the long-term Tito Díaz.

The yellows returned from the locker room with the same intensity, while Guadalajara seemed to accept their cruel destiny. Hunger combined with the desire to eat and twelve minutes after the restart the lead was doubled, reaching 26-15. Alex Mozas was able to reserve pieces and, even so, they maintained the difference both on the court and on the scoreboard, reaching a maximum of twelve goals at various times and the final 37-27.

On Monday, to Poland

Playing on Friday favors Bidasoa on this occasion, who has a rest today, trains tomorrow and will travel to Poland on Monday, to face Chrobry Glogow on Tuesday. A victory would practically mean passage to the next phase.
