Spreitenbach surprises: third place in the ranking of the “trendiest travel destinations” in Switzerland
The introduction of a tourist tax in Spreitenbach was obviously worth it: the municipality ended up at the top of an online booking platform ranking. A plea for an underestimated village.
Spreitenbach is centrally located, has a tram connection and a direct connection to the A1 motorway – which is also appreciated by many companies.
This week, the online booking platform Booking.com published the “trendiest travel destinations for the Swiss” – and to the amusement of many, Spreitenbach was in third place. In front of the Limmattal village there is only the German Kronsgaard and the Icelandic Egilsstadir. Brodarica in Croatia follows in fourth place. Of these communities, Spreitenbach probably has the worst reputation – by far.
But how did Spreitenbach make it onto this ranking? Personally, I don’t think third place is undeserved, as I consider the village to be one of the most underestimated communities in Switzerland. Many people know Spreitenbach, but foreigners who talk about the village have mainly negative comments: They know about the high proportion of foreigners, the numerous high-rise buildings and of course about the Shoppi Tivoli, the largest shopping center in Switzerland (by the way, by the way , have you ever been to the new toilet there?
But the village has much more to offer, for example the really beautiful old village center, the mystical Bruno Weber Park and now also a stately multiplex cinema. Not to forget the go-kart track, where Roger Federer famously celebrated his bachelorette party, as well as one of the most popular employers in Switzerland, this chip factory, which already attracts many visitors with its “Genusswerkstatt”. And these are just a few examples.
The French pond is also worth a trip to Spreitenbach. Its name has a historical reason: Napoleon’s troops are said to have stayed here in 1799 and emptied the pond to steal fish before they left.
But that’s probably not the reason for the good performance in the travel destinations with the greatest growth last year, according to Booking.com. But rather that Harry’s Home, the fifth hotel in the village, opened in 2023 (very close to a Hilton Hotel). From here, the airport and the “cosmopolitan city of Zurich” can be reached in under 20 minutes – the latter also directly from the hotel thanks to the new Limmattalbahn, the second Swiss branch of the Austrian hotel chain advertises on its website. After Baden, Spreitenbach now has the most hotel overnight stays in the canton, as this newspaper reported in February.
The municipality can only be congratulated for introducing a tourist tax three years ago, which was initially laughed at just as much as this Booking.com ranking is now. But you can confidently put Spreitenbach on your bucket list of travel destinations that you still have to see – and broaden your horizons with an extensive tour of the village.
The late artist Bruno Weber has been building the extraordinary sculpture park since 1962. This is also always worth a trip to Spreitenbach.
