TV presenter Jörg Wontorra, 75, known from formats such as “Sportschau” and “Doppelpass”, was temporarily arrested in Marbella. This is reported by “Bild”. The reason for this was a traffic offense that had apparently taken place six months ago. However, Wontorra did not receive a police summons because he is not officially registered in Spain.
Wontorra is currently in Marbella to host his annual golf tournament between former football professionals and sports journalists. According to the report, when the TV presenter checked into the Hardrock Hotel in Marbella, the hotel’s computer system triggered an automatic alarm. A few hours later, at around 7:45 a.m., five officers from the Spanish “Policia Nacional” appeared at Wontorra’s room door, arrested him and took him into custody.
In prison, Wontorra had to hand over personal belongings such as a cell phone and watch and was placed in a cell for pretrial detainees. The German was released after three hours after a Spanish lawyer vouched for him and took care of the outstanding summons. “I’ve already experienced a lot. But I wouldn’t have expected that at 75 I would still be able to see the inside of a prison cell,” Wontorra explained to Bild.
Arrest for traffic offense
Legal experts point out that an arrest for a traffic offense is rare but possible. Traffic lawyer Arndt Kempgens explained that if there is no response to fines or summonses, stricter measures can be taken in Spain than in Germany, including arrests or vehicle confiscation. Since 2010, fines have been recognized and enforced across borders throughout the EU.
Wontorra is currently staying in Marbella, where his lawyer has taken over the clarification of the matter.
