“I don’t have any good news to tell you,” says Mala Grohs in a video published this Saturday morning by the Bayern Munich women’s team. The 23-year-old goalkeeper explains that she suffers from a malignant tumor which forces her to leave football during her treatment.
Having started in the Bavarian cages for three seasons now, the player chose to speak directly to Bayern supporters in this video. In a serious tone, she nevertheless indicates that she remains “very optimistic” about the future. “With the doctors here, I’m in good hands,” she continues, trying to smile despite the seriousness of the situation.
“It’s a challenge I never thought I’d have to take on one day. But with everyone’s help, I will overcome it, without a doubt. And now, I will try to be alongside the team as much as possible and take the maximum energy that is given to me,” she adds.
“We are always at your side,” signs Bayern Munich, which has decided to extend its term by one year, until June 2026, following this announcement. The club says tests still need to be done, after which Mala Grohs will “focus entirely on her recovery”.
In a press release from the Bavarian club, director of women’s football Bianca Rech explains that this extension of her contract expresses “all the support” that Bayern gives to her. “Everything is being done so that she recovers first, and then returns to the field.”
Arriving in Munich in 2019, Mala Grohs discovered professional football in 2021 and has since played 81 matches with Bayern Munich. Recently, she was called up for the national team but had to withdraw due to tonsil surgery.
