At the beginning of November, four competitors from the Judo Fougères Alliance (Ille-et-Vilaine) took the plane towards Las Vegas (United States)to participate in the world championships of judo veterans : Yohann Bordini (-81kg, M6), Thierry Barbot (-81kg, M7), Jean-Pierre Thomas (-90kg, M8) and Xavier Brahim (-66kgs, M4).
1300 judokas and 200 judokates gathered there for four days of intense fights from November 4 to 7 at the prestigious Le Rio casino hotel.
Yohann Bordini, Thierry Barbot and Jean-Pierre Thomas started the competition, Monday November 4after having successfully completed the first pass of the scale the day before to be in their weight category.
Yohann Bordini, “despite a very good start”, lost by ippon in his first fight against an opponent American. He was not subsequently drafted, his opponent in turn losing in the following fight.
Franco-French duel in the semi-final
Thierry Barbot passed the first round with a forfeit from his Mongolian opponent. For the second round, in the quarter-final, he met a American and won his fight, which allowed him to reach the semi-finals.
Thierry is unable to gain the advantage over his Swiss opponent and logically loses. For his last fight for the 3rd place, the opponent is Danish, unfortunately no victory.
Thierry Barbot still finished 5th in this world championship for his first participation.
Jean-Pierre Thomas also completed his first round after his opponent forfeited English. He then also reached the semi-finals, where he fought against an opponent and friend French.
The victory is French but not to the advantage of Jean-Pierre, says the club. For the 3rd place, he fought against a Brazilian opponent and lost.
For a second participation in the world championships, Jean-Pierre Thomas finished in 5th place, after Abou d’Abi in 2023 where he failed to pass the first round.
Wednesday November 6 marked the entry into the running of Xavier Brahim against his opponent Czech Republic.
Xavier failed to express himself fully and bowed with a beautiful ippon.
As for Yohann Bordini, Xavier Brahim will not be drafted, his opponent of the day in turn losing the following fight.
“The coming of our members to Las Vegas allowed them to experience an exceptional sporting moment in a magnificent location,” underlines the Judo Alliance. Our competitors already have in mind the idea of fighting again at the next world championship which will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan. But while waiting for this one, the last competition of the year will take place in Nantes.”
