Independent curator of contemporary art, author and columnist Florence-Agathe Dubé-Moreau, has just won the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Award in the Essays category, for her book Out of play : Cultural and feminist chronicle on the sports industry. The book focuses on women who evolve in this environment and its author wanted to dissect this area with cultural and feminist tools.
She discovered the NFL world thanks to her partner Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. And it’s not without prejudice, as she explains, particularly regarding players’ wives and cheerleaders. But with this book, she wanted to show the contribution of women to this sport.
« These are women who have exceptional strength […] I wanted to place them in dialogue with the sports industry and show how they are transforming sport from the inside. »
Mental load, dedication, but also the quality of the athletes that are the cheerleaders, Florence-Agathe Dubé-Moreau also talks about the evolution and historical inclusion of women in sport such as with the creation of numerous women’s sports teams.
