Kosovo cancels game because of Serbia chants in Bucharest – Sport

After a scandal, the C-League Football Nations League game between Romania and Kosovo was canceled. In Bucharest, the visiting players left the pitch in stoppage time after chants of “Serbia” and never returned. Romanian fans also displayed banners that focused on their country’s connection to Serbia. The Romanians remained on the field, but after more than 30 minutes of waiting, the Danish referee Morten Krogh decided to abandon the game. At this point it was 0-0.

Europe’s football union Uefa announced disciplinary proceedings against both associations; according to the Nations League regulations, the game would have to be counted for Romania. The conflict between Kosovo and Serbia has been simmering for over 30 years. The Republic of Kosovo declared itself independent in 2008, but is not recognized by all UN states.
