One candidate holds a lighter to a banknote, another brings a pair of swimming trunks, and a third praises Hertha as the “best relegated team of all time”. The Berlin second division team experienced a memorable meeting during the election of the new president – with a clear winner.
It wasn’t even 1:30 p.m. on Sunday when one could more than guess the result of the presidential election for second division club Hertha BSC. More precisely: when Fabian Drescher, 42, who has been acting as managing director since the death of ex-chairman Kay Bernstein, finished his five-minute application speech. Cheers erupted and a large portion of the approximately 4,000 members rose from their seats to applaud: the hall belonged to him.
