Successful coach Sebastian Hoeneß has an exit option at VfB Stuttgart. Nevertheless, club boss Alex Wehrle expects a shared future.
Stuttgart – VfB Stuttgart cannot yet fully confirm the outstanding preseason. The reasons may be varied: the unusual triple burden and star departures certainly play a role, and the Swabians are also sometimes just unlucky. It’s not just Lothar Matthäus who thinks VfB’s performance is better than its standings in the Bundesliga.
In any case, Sebastian Hoeneß’s work remains beyond all doubt. The successful coach is also making players better this season and has shaped several DFB debutants. Because of a rumored moderate exit clause in Hoeneß’s contract, there are always rumors of a farewell after the season. Club boss Alexander Wehrle is betting against it.
Sebastian Hoeneß would be a hot candidate to succeed Xabi Alonso in Leverkusen
“I am firmly convinced that we can keep him at VfB Stuttgart for a very long time,” said Wehrle on RTL/ntv about Hoeneß’s situation. “He knows what he has at VfB, and we know what we have in him.” The Swabians extended Hoeneß’s contract early in March until 2027, but had to grant the exit clause.
Because of this contract option, Hoeneß is considered a preferred candidate at Bayer Leverkusen, for example, in the event of Xabi Alonso leaving, which, according to information from fussball.news is likely and should lead him to Real Madrid. Other clubs are also likely to look at Hoeneß, who has given his team a clear footballing compass and established himself as a maker of improvements.
Alexander Wehrle: Hoeneß “wants to go to VfB”
For reasons of seriousness, VfB itself is looking at all scenarios and is said to be considering former Stuttgart youth player Matthias Jaissle as a potential successor to Hoeneß. Jaissle is currently active in Saudi Arabia with al-Ahli. According to Wehrle, however, it remains a theoretical matter. He is fully committed to the future with Hoeneß.
“It is clear that someone who is so successful is noticed from outside and by other clubs. I think there are few clubs that still have so much potential and so much perspective,” said Wehrle. For him, what Hoeneß himself says about his situation is “crucial”. “I know he wants to go to VfB. And that’s what matters. We will be working with him for a very long time,” Wehrle said.
