Málaga (Spain). Spain’s great player Rafael Nadal is preparing to bid farewell to tennis through the Davis Cup finals to be held in front of the home crowd here from Tuesday. Nadal, 38, has been playing for more than 20 years and is the second player from tennis’ ‘Big Three’ to retire. Roger Federer retired from the game in 2022 while Novak Djokovic is still playing.
Nadal, who has been practicing continuously in Malaga since last week, said, “It is a difficult decision which took me time to take. But whatever has started in life has to end. I think this is the right time to say goodbye. My career has been longer and more successful than I ever imagined. It is not yet clear when Nadal’s last match will be because the Davis Cup is a team event and it is not yet decided what the further results will be.
Spain has to play the Netherlands on Tuesday and if it wins, it will face Canada or Germany in the semi-finals on Friday. There are to be two matches in singles and one in doubles. It is not known yet whether Nadal will play singles, doubles, both or neither. Along with Nadal, Spain’s team includes four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Batista Agut, Pedro Martínez and Marcel Granollers.
