Jannik Sinner (23, Italy), the world number one in men’s tennis, lifted the championship trophy in the final match of the 2024 season of the Men’s Professional Tennis (ATP) Tour.

Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz (5th place, USA) 2-0 (6-4 6-4) in the singles final on the last day of the Neito ATP Finals (total prize money: $15.25 million) held in Turin, Italy on the 17th (local time). Overpowered.

The Finals is a competition in which the top eight players in the world rankings compete. Sinner, who swept the major tournaments this year, the Australian Open and the US Open, had her best year by dominating this tournament as well.

Sinner is the first Italian player to win the singles title in this competition, which determines the strongest player of the season, in 55 years since the competition was founded in 1970. Sinner, who won the tournament in a singles match without loss in 38 years since Ivan Lendl in 1986, received $4,881,500 (approximately 6.81 billion won) in prize money. This is much more than the $3.6 million prize money for this year’s U.S. Open singles championship.

Sinner reached the singles finals of higher-level tournaments on the tour nine times this year and won eight times, the most on the tour. In addition, he became the first player born after 2000 to become the singles champion of this tournament. Sinner, born in 2001, said, “It means a lot to me to win the title for the first time in Italy. I am very happy because it is the result of my thorough preparation for each match and my efforts to perform well.”

Sinner met Fritz in the finals of this year’s US Open and won 3-0 (6-3 6-4 7-5), and also won the group stage of this tournament, maintaining a 4-1 lead over the opponent. Novak Djokovic (6th place, Serbia), who formed the men’s tennis ‘top three’ with Sinner this year, did not participate in this tournament, and Carlos Alcaras (3rd place, Spain) was eliminated in the group stage.
