Miami – “Our first thought when we were diagnosed was just, ‘Okay, so what?'” recalls Jake Burger, player for the Miami Marlins of Major League Baseball (MLB), in an interview with PEOPLE. The 28-year-old and his wife Ashlyn recently welcomed their second daughter, Penelope, who was born with Down syndrome.
For the couple, the diagnosis is not a challenge, but rather an expression of God’s plan to make life more fulfilling.
Even before Penelope was born, it was clear to them that her needs would be “different”. But Burger emphasizes: “What initially seems like an obstacle often becomes the greatest blessing.” The differences that define her daughter are what make her particularly lovable. Ashlyn added: “God gave us Penelope so we could show others how special life with Down syndrome can be.”
The couple is determined to give Penelope every opportunity and to support other families with children with special needs. “The love and support we have received from the community and other parents gives us strength. Our goal is to accompany as many families as possible on this journey,” says the couple.
The birth of Penelope underscores that every life, regardless of diagnosis, has inalienable dignity. Given the fact that in Germany over 90% of children with a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome are aborted, this story clearly shows how important it is not to leave expectant parents alone in such situations and instead to provide support and courage to protect lives.
