Catcher Russell Martin, outfielder Ichiro Suzuki and pitcher CC Sabathia are among 14 new candidates who could be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, joining a group that includes reliever Billy Wagner in its ranks.
Martin, who hails from Toronto, is one of three catchers (along with Carlton Fisk and Ivan Rodriguez) to have reached the plateaus of 100 home runs and 100 stolen bases in the modern era. The Canadian, selected four times for the All-Star game, has an attendance plus power coefficient of .746 in 14 seasons in Major League Baseball with the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees and Pirates. Gunner Felix Hernandez, outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and infielders Dustin Pedroia and Hanley Ramirez are also among the new eligible candidates, along with reliever Fernando Rodney, second baseman Ian Kinsler, second baseman/outfielder Ben Zobrist, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, catcher Brian McCann and outfielders Curtis Granderson and Adam Jones.
Wagner had 284 votes for 73.8% of the vote on the 2024 ballot, just five votes shy of the 75% needed to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Ultimately, third baseman Adrian Beltre, catcher/first baseman Joe Mauer and first baseman Todd Helton were inducted. Wagner’s name will appear on the ballot for the 10th and final time.
Other players who will be back on the ballot include Alex Rodriguez (134 votes, 34.8%), Manny Ramirez (125, 32.5%), Andruw Jones (237, 61.6%), Carlos Beltran (220, 57.1%), Chase Utley (111, 28.8%), Omar Vizquel (68, 17.7%), Jimmy Rollins (57, 14.8%), Bobby Abreu (57, 14.8%), Andy Pettitte (52, 13.5%), Mark Buehrle (32, 8.3%), Francisco RodrÃguez (30, 7.8%), Torii Hunter (28, 7 .3%) and David Wright (24, 6.2%).
Members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) for 10 or more consecutive seasons are eligible to vote. Votes must be submitted by December 31, and the results will be revealed on January 23, 2025.
The eventual elected players will then be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 27, along with the eventual elected players who will have been selected on December 8 by a committee which will review the applications of eight players and managers whose greatest contributions to the sport took place before 1980.
