This person spoke on condition of anonymity to speak with The Associated Press on Monday because the Giants have not confirmed the information; head coach Brian Daboll was scheduled to meet with members of the media later in the day.
Daboll had hinted a change was being considered after the Giants (2-8) entered their bye week following an overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers (3-7) in Germany on Nov. 10. .
Jones, 27, has thrown 10 touchdown passes and thrown 13 interceptions this season, including two in the penalty area in a 20-17 loss to the Panthers in Munich. He has compiled a 3-13 record in his last 16 starts, and the Giants are languishing last in the league in points scored, with an average of 15.6 points per game.
Jones signed a four-year, $160 million pact after leading the Giants to the NFL playoffs in Daboll’s first season at the helm in 2022. He was limited last season due to a neck injury, followed by a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in a knee.
For his part, DeVito was third in the Giants’ quarterback hierarchy for each of the team’s games this season.
The New Jersey quarterback, affectionately nicknamed “Tommy Cutlets” by New York fans, edged out veteran Drew Lock, notably after going 3-3 as a rookie starting quarterback following injuries to Jones and backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor last season.
The Giants have seven more games to play this season, and it’s possible Jones could be left out for all of them. The Giants are on track to be a top draft pick in the upcoming NFL draft, and it’s reasonable to believe they will select a quarterback.
