Die Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships (kurz: Orange Bowl) is a world junior tennis tournament that takes place annually in December. The tournament has been organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) since 1987. The Grade A tournament is one of the world’s most important tennis tournaments for juniors.
The Orange Bowl Tennis Championships for girls and boys in the age groups 16 (until 1962: 15) and 18 years were first held in 1947 at the Flamingo Tennis Center in Miami Beach and were held there for another 51 years. The tournament was started by Eddie Herr, who wanted to bring a winter tournament to South Beach for his tennis-playing daughter Suzanne.
In 1983, during the tournament’s heyday, the tournament became professional Abel Holtz Stadium with space for 9,000 spectators in Flamingo Park. During the 1990s, the facility fell into disrepair due to poor maintenance, and the tournament was then moved to the Tennis Center at Crandon Park on the island of Key Biscayne from 1999 to 2010, where the women’s WTA Miami and men’s Miami Masters also took place until 2019. The tournament has been taking place since 2011 Frank Veltri Tennis Center based in Plantation.
The following well-known players won this tournament: Chris Evert, Nicolás Pereira, Justine Henin, Horst Skoff (2×), Katarina Srebotnik, Stefan Edberg, Tommy Haas, Roger Federer, Marc Rosset and Manuela Maleeva. To date, Mary Joe Fernández is the only player to have been successful in all age groups (10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 years).
