The Kremlin spokesman renewed the threat on Tuesday and told the daily press conference that Washington’s gesture could lead to a nuclear response, according to the Russian news agency Tass. Peskov has warned, alluding to the US, that the new nuclear doctrine should make both Russia and abroad think twice. While acknowledging that the use of nuclear weapons is an extreme measure, the Russian spokesman has argued that the document needed to be updated to align it with the current political situation.
The updated doctrine, which outlines threats that would prompt Russia to consider a nuclear attack, includes attacks by conventional missiles, drones or other aircraft, and adds that any aggression against Russia by a member state of an alliance would be considered by Moscow as an aggression by the entire coalition. It should be recalled that the document had already been updated weeks before the US presidential election, when Putin ordered changes to the nuclear doctrine to warn that any conventional attack on Russia aided by a nuclear power could be considered a joint attack against Russia.
