President-elect Donald Trump’s ‘Trump Dance’ is showing signs of becoming popular in the sports world.
The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 18th that the number of athletes imitating President-elect Trump’s movements in various sports is increasing.
President-elect Trump’s ‘Trump Dance’ was a movement performed during a campaign rally, and was initially considered a laughing stock. This movement, in which the upper body is kept stiff and only the arms are crossed, emphasizes the image of ‘body strength’ rather than a dance.
However, after the UFC event held at Madison Square Garden in New York on the 16th, perspectives on this movement changed. This is because heavyweight champion Jon Jones performed the ‘Trump Dance’ to President-elect Trump in the VIP section after winning by TKO. After the game, Jones greeted President-elect Trump by handing him his championship belt.
As the Trump dance appeared at major UFC events, NFL players also began to follow suit. On the 17th, Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders performed this dance in celebration after a touchdown, and it soon spread to other players.
However, it is unclear whether this movement will spread throughout the sports world. Antipathy toward President-elect Trump and awareness of advertising sponsorship in the United States are major variables.
In fact, the Las Vegas Raiders deleted Bowers’ remarks from their postgame press release and edited out Trump’s dance ceremony from their highlight video.
