The recent publication of several videos on the Instagram account of Kyle Singlera former player in the NBA and various teams in Spain, has aroused great concern among both his followers and the authorities. The disturbing messages that Singler has shared over the past week have led the Medford, Oregon Police to become aware of the situation.
A spokesperson for the Medford Police Department confirmed to TMZ that they are aware of the videos, but declined to comment on the former player’s mental health status. “We are aware of the videos that have been published, but we will not make any statements regarding the mental health of any individual person,” the spokesperson said.
Concern for Singler’s well-being intensified after the publication of six videos, the first of them on November 11, in which the former player expresses feelings of anguish and vulnerability. In the videos, Singler claims to have been a victim of mistreatment and abuse, and claims to be immersed in a “religious war.”
“I need to speak up because I feel like my voice is being silenced,” Singler says in one of the videos. “Every day they throw things at me. I have been mistreated, they have abused me. My community is destroyed. They have made me an example of mental health and I fear for my life. Every day I look away, as if I were a problem for people, when in reality I just want to be useful. I feel that there is a purpose for not valuing me or respecting me,” he explains, visibly affected.
Kyle Singler was selected 33rd overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons after starring at Duke University. His NBA career began with the Pistons, where he played until 2015, and continued in the Oklahoma City Thunderwhere he remained until 2018. During those years, Singler also had a stint in Spanish basketball, where he played for teams such as Lucentum Alicante (2011), Real Madrid (2011-2012), Monbus Obradoiro (2018-2019) and Iberostar Tenerife ( 2019).
His departure from NBA and his transition to European basketball was seen by many as an opportunity to continue his career at a competitive level, but the current situation has called into question his personal and emotional well-being.
The case of Kyle Singler highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues in sports and the need to create a more open and understanding environment so that players can seek help without fear of being stigmatized.
