CONSELVE (PADUA) – He leaves the B&B where he stayed overnight, falls ill and dies despite almost immediate help: the victim is Massimo Mattioli, 71 years old, from Rome, a national manager in the Judo sector. The tragedy occurred yesterday morning in Piazza Donatori di Sangue: maestro Mattioli had participated in two demonstrations, Saturday in Carceri and yesterday in Conselve, in which the Olympic champion Matteo Piras also took part. Master Livio Boscaro, from Agna, who teaches martial arts at the Asd Green Fit Kodokan Live in Conselve, tells how things went: «I have known master Mattioli for years, he has a very respectable curriculum and was coach of the champion Piras. Therefore we thought of having him as a guest at this stage which in Conselve saw the presence of around 120 athletes from all over Northern Italy, organized with colleagues from Carceri”.

The testimony

Boscaro continues: «On Saturday morning I went to the Rovigo station where maestro Mattioli had arrived by train and we went with him to Carceri, and then accompanied him to the B&B in Conselve. On Sunday morning he participated in the meeting we held at the Morelli gym, he also met the mayor Umberto Perilli and the municipal councilor responsible for sport Luca Bissacco”. Mattioli then had lunch with the organizers in a restaurant in Tribano and retired to the welcoming structure created in the old railway toll booth along the Conselvana road.
Yesterday morning Maestro Mattioli, who would have turned 72 on November 21st, got up regularly and also informed his family in Rome that he would take the train to return to the capital around 12. He had left the B&B, waiting for the friend Livio Boscaro, when he suddenly felt ill and fell to the ground. A young woman who works at the Epta Nord analysis laboratory which is located on the opposite side of the road noticed this. “I was returning to the company when I realized that one of my colleagues, on her lunch break, had intervened having seen this person in difficulty” says Anna Ferioli, daughter of the owner of the company that carries out analyzes in the agri-food and agro-zootechnical sector.
«We understood that the situation was very complicated, so much so that two colleagues capable of carrying out cardiac massage also arrived from the company», adds Anna, while 118, who had been alerted, was giving instructions while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. In the meantime, his friend Boscaro had also arrived on site, also authorized to carry out cardiac massage, while the defibrillator had also been brought from Epta Nord. The Suem health workers then took over from the volunteers but despite the attempts there was nothing left for Massimo Mattioli to do. A Carabinieri patrol also arrived in Blood Donor Square to carry out the ritual checks, then the body was disposed of in the Schiavonia morgue. Master Livio Boscaro has the task of notifying the family members of the authoritative judo exponent (his son Michele is one of the best competitors in Lazio) who arrived in Veneto yesterday evening.
«We are truly saddened, a great loss for judo, but also a very valid master, with great experience», adds Livio Boscaro, moved and still feeling emotional. The news of Massimo Mattioli’s death also reached the Municipality, which had sponsored the event: «We are really sorry – comments the sports councilor Luca Bissacco – on Sunday morning I had the pleasure of meeting maestro Mattioli who was pleased for the organization of the event, with so many athletes in the Morelli gym.”
