The NFL’s Dallas Cowboys’ injury misery shows no sign of letting up. In the game against the Houston Texans (10:34), Pro Bowl tight end Jake Ferguson had to leave the field after suffering a concussion in the first half and was unable to return. Ferguson had previously made a catch for 11 yards on the Cowboys’ first possession, but was not played afterward before his injury was announced.

Ferguson as a key pass catcher
Before the game, Ferguson was the Cowboys’ second-leading pass catcher behind wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. His loss leaves a void that must now be filled by Luke Schoonmaker, Brevyn Spann-Ford and Princeton Fant. These three tight ends have combined for just 10 catches through the first nine games of the season. Fant was only elevated from the practice squad on Monday because fullback Hunter Luepke was unable to play due to a calf injury.
Bad luck with injuries throughout the season
Ferguson suffered a knee sprain in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns and missed the following game against the New Orleans Saints. In total, eleven of the Cowboys’ 22 starters from the season opener have missed games due to injuries. The loss of quarterback Dak Prescott, who is out for the rest of the season after hamstring surgery, is particularly difficult. Prescott was seen on crutches at the game at AT&T Stadium, watching the game from the dugout.
The Cowboys face the challenge of compensating for these injury absences and still achieving their goals for the season. The coming weeks will show how the team deals with these setbacks.
