Malaga (dpa) – Roger Federer ennobled his long-time rival Rafael Nadal before his last week of tennis. “You challenged me in a way no one else could,” Federer wrote on Instagram.

Federer (43) and Nadal (38) dominated world tennis for years, most recently together with Novak Djokovic (37) for many years. Federer ended his career two years ago at the Laver Cup in London. In his last match he played doubles with Nadal. At the following farewell ceremony for the Swiss, the two superstars sat next to each other crying.

Shared tears at Federer’s farewell

“Sharing the space with you that night and sharing those tears will forever be one of the most special moments in my career,” wrote the Swiss.

Nadal has announced he will end his career at the Davis Cup finals in Malaga this week. In the evening (5 p.m.) Spain will face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. It is still unclear whether the 22-time Grand Slam tournament winner, who has hardly played at all due to injuries, will play.
