Indonesia can continue to hope for World Cup participation. Four days ago they lost 0-4 to Japan. On Tuesday, the Indonesians recorded a surprising 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, which defeated future champion Argentina at the last World Cup.
The victory lifted Indonesia to third place in the Asian qualifying group C with six points from six matches. The best two countries of the three groups go directly to the World Cup, numbers three and four continue in the fourth phase. The Dutch-born Indonesian internationals formed a majority in the starting line-up, with goalkeeper Maarten Paes, captain Jay Idzes, Justin Hubner , Calvin Verdonk, Thom Haye, Ivar Jenner, Rafael Struick and Ragnar Oratmangoen.
The leading role was reserved for a 20-year-old attacking midfielder from Indonesian soil. Marselino Ferdinan, player of the English Oxford United, opened the score in the 32nd minute on a pass from Oratmangoen. The Jakarta-born Ferdinan also scored the second goal with a flick of the wrist. Hubner received his second yellow card in the final minute and had to leave the field. For Indonesia it was the first victory in the group.
