Nothing again: This regular season, no NFL team will be able to match the legendary Miami Dolphins. That’s why Fins fans and especially the legends can celebrate again – even if the current team is still fighting.
Miami Dolphins fans have had something to celebrate again since Week 11 – thanks to the Buffalo Bills and quarterback Josh Allen.

Head coach Mike McDaniel certainly doesn’t have time to celebrate. After all, he still has to lead the current Miami Dolphins team into the playoffs. What with the manageable interim balance of 4-6 will still be a feat of strength.
With the comeback of quarterback Tuanigamanuolepola “Tua” Tagovailoa, whose future as an active athlete had not been clear for a long time after another concussion, things are definitely looking better again. Sunday’s win, 34:19 against the Las Vegas Raiders, underlines this.
The third playoff participation in a row seems absolutely possible again for star receiver Tyreek Hill, running back De’Von Achane & Co., even if the glorious old Dolphins days like the only titles in 1972/73 and 1973/74 or the legendary Dan Marino period without a coronation (1983 to 1999) seem at least unattainable at the moment.
1972/73 is alive again for the Dolphins
Many smiling faces can be found in Miami since the beginning of this week. Because right in the middle of this still competitive season in the AFC East is the following fact: The previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, who are aiming for a three-pack title after two Super Bowl victories in a row and started this season 9-0 , lost the top game to the Dolphins’ direct division rival Buffalo Bills (9-2) 21:30. Because their quarterback Josh Allen secured the victory with a fantastic run at the end.
The positive side effect of this for Miami: None of the 32 NFL teams in 2024/25 are undefeated.
And so we can now toast to another year of consistency – more precisely, once again to the team of the 1972/73 season. Because the Dolphins, who were then coached by legendary head coach Don Shula, are still the only team that had a “perfect season”.
At that time, Miami had survived the regular season, which had not yet been extended to 17 games (18 games are now being discussed), with a score of 14-0, before beating the Cleveland Browns (20:14), the Pittsburgh Steelers (21:17) and the following in the playoffs Super Bowl VII who at that time were still called the Redskins (today Commanders) athletes from Washington (14:7) were defeated.
That’s why the “Class of ’72” will of course come together again – appropriately dressed in turquoise blue suits – and pop one or two champagne or champagne corks to celebrate their unique football event of an “undefeated season”. The still living legends such as quarterback Bob Griese, fullback Larry Csonka, wide receiver Howard Twilley, cornerback Curtis Johnson and safety Dick Anderson have enjoyed this special reputation for over 50 years.
