Since the flood, the gym of the Judo Power of life amateur sports association of Giarre, which is based in via Massimo D’Azeglio, has no longer been able to carry out activities. The sports facility was, in fact, hit by a sea of water that reached 12 centimeters inside the venue. As vice president Mariarosaria Sturiale explains: “The water ruined the tartan floor, the parquet collapsed and the fitness equipment was also ruined.”
Once the flood wave passed, the young members of the gym, and also the families of the children enrolled, lent a hand to clean up the gym: a job that started at 8.30 in the morning and ended at 8.30. The last debris was removed only last Sunday. The sports association, chaired by Antonio Mavilia, is currently at a standstill. “We are closed waiting to restore the structure – adds Sturiale – the electrical wire ducts run to the ground and therefore there are also problems with the electrical system”. The members are continuing to go to the gym to be together, but sports cannot be practiced in these conditions.
The association presented the report of the damages suffered in the damage survey carried out by the Municipality, but in order to restart, in fact, it is a question of having to repeat the initial investment and at the moment there is no talk of compensation or compensation and it is not certain that State and Region provide aid to economic activities and private individuals who have suffered damage due to the flood.
In the meantime, the Sicily regional Judo sector committee has started a fundraiser to help the gym restart. The Giarrese sports association also launches an appeal to the hinterland community to contribute, each with a small donation, to bring this sporting reality back to life.
