The tournament will feature eight countries (Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Australia, USA, Germany, Canada, and Argentina) competing for the world’s number one spot in a tournament format. The match will consist of two singles matches and one doubles match, with the winner being the first to win two matches.
Australia, aiming for its first national title since 2003, finished as runners-up in the 2022 and 2023 tournaments, and will aim to win its long-awaited 29th title this year.
The first match was against America, the favorite for the championship, with T. Fritz (USA), T. Paul (USA), and B. Shelton (USA). Australia sent in T. Kokkinakis (Australia).
First match singles. Kokkinakis broke Shelton three times in the first set and took the lead, but in the second set he was unable to convert five break chances and was caught up with the set count 1-1.
In the final set, they exchanged service aces with 10 Kokkinakis and 11 Shelton, and neither player was able to get a break. The match went to the first tie-break, but neither team conceded and the score was 14-14. Kokkinakis then scored two points in a row and won the battle. The score was 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (16-14) for Kokkinakis.
In the second singles match, A. de Minaur (Australia) lost to Fritz in straight sets 4-6, 4-6, making it 1 win and 1 loss, but in the final doubles match, M. Ebden (Australia) / J. Thompson (Australia) defeated Shelton/Paul in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, advancing to the final four with two wins and one loss.
A comment from Australian captain L. Hewitt (Australia) has been posted on the official ATP website of the Men’s Professional Tennis Association.
“This tournament has a rich history spanning over 100 years, so today’s players know the greats from the past and it’s a great honor to have the opportunity to wear the green and gold here. Over the last three or four years, the usual six players have been working together and coming together really well.”
Australia will face Italy in the semi-finals. Italy defeated Argentina in the quarterfinals with two wins and one loss.
