(East Rutherford) The Daniel Jones era is over for the New York Giants.
The quarterback asked to be released Friday, days after the Giants announced they would leave him on the bench to hand over the reins of the offensive unit to backup Tommy DeVito.
“Daniel came to see me [vendredi] morning and requested that he be released, Giants President John Mara said in a statement. We mutually agreed that it was the best thing to do for him and for the team. »
Mara added that he was “disappointed” by the deterioration of the relationship between the two clans.
“Daniel has been an excellent representative of our organization, first class in every way,” said Mara. We hold Daniel in high esteem and love him very much. We wish him nothing but the best for the future. »
Jones, 27, told reporters Thursday that he gave everything he had for the team that selected him sixth overall in the 2019 draft. He believes he can still play in the NFL and took the blame for the fact that the team has only made the playoffs once since he was the starting quarterback.
Head coach Brian Daboll removed Jones from the first offensive unit in practice Monday after a bye week following a 20-17 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 10 in Germany.
DeVito will start Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Daboll hopes this change creates a spark.
“I’m not happy about it, definitely,” Jones said Thursday. It’s not something we want to hear. There are lots of emotions. But at the end of the day, it’s football. It’s business, we expect results and we weren’t winning. »
