Brandon Allen will be the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, replacing the injured Brock Purdy, coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday.
Shanahan said star defensive end Nick Bosa will also miss the game with left hip and oblique injuries. Tackle Trent Williams is questionable due to an ankle injury and a decision will be made before the game.
This will be the first time Purdy has missed a start due to injury since taking over the starting quarterback role in December 2022.
Allen has started nine games this season since entering the league after being selected in the sixth round of the 2016 draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Three of those departures were for the Denver Broncos in 2019 and the other six were with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020 and 2021. He has been a member of the 49ers since 2023.
Purdy has been a limited participant in practice due to right shoulder soreness. He appeared on the injured players report for the first time Monday, when Shanahan discussed injuries after the game against the Seattle Seahawks.
In 10 games this season, Purdy has completed 202 passes for 2,613 yards and thrown 13 touchdown passes. He was the victim of eight interceptions.
Finally reinforcement in Tampa
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers should bank on the expected return to play of their star receiver Mike Evans on Sunday against the New York Giants.
The team’s head coach Todd Bowles hinted that he expects to see his receiver in uniform as long as he stays healthy. Evans suffered a hamstring injury in Week 7 in a game against the Baltimore Ravens. He was then sidelined for three games, three defeats for the Bucs, despite closely contested matches.
Evans had indicated there had been a possibility of a return to action against the San Francisco 49ers, but the decision was made that he would wait and then use the team’s bye week to recover further. .
Tampa is without its other star receiver, Chris Godwin, for the rest of the season.
Mike Evans is looking to join Jerry Rice this season with an 11th consecutive campaign of at least 1,000 yards. Currently at 335 yards, he will need to average 95 yards per game to achieve this. He has never recorded fewer than 1,000 yards in a season since the start of his career.
The Eagles without DeVonta Smith
The Eagles will not have their star receiver combination to face the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night.
DeVonta Smith will not be in uniform due to a hamstring injury. He will therefore miss a second game this season after that of the fourth week of activities against the Buccaneers. The Eagles had lost by a score of 33-16.
In nine games this season, Smith has rushed for 516 yards and scored four touchdowns.
The Eagles lead the National East Division with an 8-2 record. The Rams are tied with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco Niners at 5-5 for second in the West. The Arizona Cardinals lead at 6-4.
