He Puerto Vallarta Challenger is presenting a bright hope for Mexican tennis by having a representative in the quarterfinals and it is Luis Carlos Álvarez, who defeated the first Aztec racket in the second round, Rodrigo Pacheco by 4-6 6-3 and 6-3.
Against all odds, Álvarez beat the Yucatecan who was severely affected by a back injury in the third set and thus extended the good pace he has had this week in Puerto Vallarta. The tennis player from Mexico City had scored in the first round by adding his first Challenger victory against Valerio Aboia, eighth seed in the tournament, and this Thursday he added his first quarterfinal by winning over his compatriot.
But with his victory against Pacheco he not only debuted among the best eight, but also became the second Mexican this season to advance to the quarterfinals in a Challenger tournament, something that Pacheco had already done in Acapulco and Zagreb. With this, it is the first time since 2012 that two or more Mexicans have managed to advance to this stage in the same season.
Now Álvarez will seek to go one step further when tonight he faces the German Mats Rosenkranz in order to add the first tennis semi-final for his country on the Challenger Circuit since 2010–
More than a decade passed 😳
For the first time in 1️⃣2️⃣ years, multiple Mexican tennis players have reached the 4th finals in Challenger tournaments in the same season
