The family of Melbourne teenager Holly Bowles has confirmed that she died of suspected methanol poisoning while on holiday in Laos.
The 19-year-old girl died in a Bangkok hospital on Friday with her parents by her side. A day earlier, her friend Bianca Jones died in another hospital in the Thai capital with her family by her side.
“It is with heavy hearts and with great sadness that we share that our beautiful girl Holly is now resting in peace,” Powers’ family said in a statement.
On behalf of the Australian people, Foreign Minister Anthony Wong expressed his deepest condolences to the Balls family following his death on Thursday.
“I know these two families will be in the hearts of all Australians tonight,” Wong wrote on social media.
The two girls, from Beaumaris Football Club in Melbourne’s southeast, were on holiday in Laos last week when they became ill in the popular tourist city of Vang Vieng, along with a dozen other tourists.
At present, six people have died in a suspected large-scale methanol poisoning incident in Vientiane.
