NFL: New York Giants and quarterback Jones go their separate ways

Instead of sitting on the bench for the New York Giants, Daniel Jones will be leaving the franchise effective immediately. The Giants granted their quarterback his wish on Friday and parted ways with him.

After a good five and a half years it’s over: Daniel Jones is leaving the New York Giants.

In March 2023, Daniel Jones signed a new contract with the New York Giants for four years and $160 million. In the current season he was on the field in all ten games as the starting quarterback – however, the 17:20 defeat against the Carolina Panthers in Munich before the bye week was his last game in a Giants jersey.

After it emerged at the beginning of the week that Jones would lose his job as a starter, the separation now follows. As the Giants announced on Friday, the team released the 27-year-old at his request.

According to Giants President John Mara, both sides mutually agreed that a separation was “best for him and the team.” Although everyone involved was “disappointed with how things turned out,” Jones represented the Giants first-class at all times and handled the new situation with dignity, Mara said in a statement.

The Giants chose Jones in sixth position in the 2019 draft, but apart from good performances in the 2022 season including playoff participation – which ultimately earned him a lucrative contract extension – he was hardly able to convince. After a weak start to the 2023 season and a torn cruciate ligament, Jones also disappointed in 2024.

DeVito takes over for the Giants

His eight touchdowns through the air in ten games this season are compared to seven interceptions and four fumbles. His quarterback rating, which is made up of various statistics, is just 46.5 – 26th among the 32 starting quarterbacks. The team from the Big Apple has only won two of its ten games so far with Jones.

While Tommy DeVito will now take over as quarterback for the Giants – for the first time next Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jones will most likely become a free agent. Although he will initially be placed on the so-called waiver list, no team will likely take him due to his high salary. Only then can he sign a new contract with any team as a free agent. With the release, the Giants have a dead cap for the coming season of more than $20 million.
