U.S. President-elect Donald Trump nominated former National Football League (NFL) player Scott Turner (52), former chairman of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC), as a candidate for Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the next administration.
President-elect Trump issued a statement on the 22nd (local time), announcing that he was nominating former Chairman Turner as a candidate for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
President-elect Trump said, “Scott is a former NFL player who served as WHORC chairman in my first term, leading unprecedented efforts to transform some of America’s most underserved communities.”
“Scott will work with me to make America great again for all Americans,” he said.
Former Chairman Turner is a former NFL player and served as a member of the Texas State House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017. During Trump’s first term, from 2019 to 2021, he led the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Committee.
After retiring from the NFL, he worked at a software development company. Most recently, he served as an executive for a real estate development and management company operating in Dallas and Southern California.
He is currently serving as an advisor to the America First Policy Institute, President-elect Trump’s think tank. He is also an associate pastor at a Baptist church located north of Dallas, Texas.
If it passes Senate confirmation, it will face challenges such as stabilizing housing prices, which have soared since the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected that the overhaul of the homeless program, a pledge of President-elect Trump, will also begin.
According to Politico, former Chairman Turner is a little-known figure, and there is a somewhat perplexing response from the housing industry.
The New York Times also reported that initial reactions were mixed. Some low-income housing experts said they did not know enough about Turner to evaluate her, while others hailed it as a positive considering her performance in Trump’s first term.
David Dworkin, president and CEO of the National Housing Association, said, “Turner has a strong commitment to community development and actively supported investment in underserved communities during the early days of the Trump administration.”
