The mood is changing in Hamburg. The ambitious HSV lost a 2-0 lead against Schalke 04. The Gelsenkirchen team initially made catastrophic mistakes and seemed to come under the wheels, but then showed morale.
Hamburger SV remains without a win in its fourth game in the 2nd Bundesliga and is therefore in crisis. In the duel between the problem-plagued traditional clubs, the Hanseatic League deservedly didn’t get more than a 2-2 (2-0) draw against FC Schalke 04. The fans criticized the performance with a concert of whistles.
“The first half was very good. That’s how we imagined it. After the 2-1 it looked very wild for ten or twelve minutes. The result belies the performance that the boys showed over long stretches,” said HSV coach Steffen Baumgart, who doesn’t panic: “We have to stick with it and not raise the white flags every week. We show that we can win the game. We just don’t do it. But we also have shit on our hands at the moment.”
For his team, the gap to the top of the table is only four points, but the draw for the insecure North Germans, who are among the promotion candidates, was clearly not enough. Schalke are two points away from the relegation zone. “Together with the win in Regensburg, it gives us self-confidence,” said Schalke striker Kenan Karaman.
Summer newcomer Marco Richter (29th minute) and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer (30th) initially scored the goals for the North Germans in the Volksparkstadion, the atmosphere was captivating. Amin Younes (57th) and Karaman (74th) shocked HSV and its supporters.
Heekeren and Schallenberg make mistakes
57,000 spectators, floodlights, two traditional clubs: the conditions for the game were at least ready for the first league. But the favored North Germans had a difficult time after the lively start. The guests’ tactically well-adjusted defense effortlessly parried the tentative attack attempts.
The hosts needed a promising set piece. And she came. Marco Richter saved HSV and his own followers in the Volkspark with a free kick. He placed the shot into the net in the goalkeeper’s corner against Justin Heekeren’s direction of travel. Hamburg immediately followed up: Königsdörffer took advantage of a terrible back pass from S04 defender Ron Schallenberg to goalkeeper Justin Heekeren and increased the score just a minute later.
“The 0:2 must never happen. We’re giving HSV the goal,” said Karaman after the game: “I got very, very loud during the break and woke up the team. After that we played very well up front, dominated the game and were rewarded. I think the reaction is good.”
Schalke made a bit of an effort after the double setback. Overall, the guests didn’t have enough chances to score. But they were rewarded for their increased efforts in the second half.
Amin Younes benefited from a poorly cleared ball by HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau and brought Schalke closer to a draw with his goal. Schalke kept getting better. After Sylla’s goal was offside, Karaman scored the deserved equalizer.
“It was a very good first half. We put Schalke under good pressure. The second goal speaks for itself, how forcefully we forced it,” said striker Davie Selke. “In the second half we didn’t show a good face for 30 minutes. The result is of course disappointing.”
