From fights to glory again? Astros talk about Verlander’s return!

The Houston Astros are reportedly in talks with Justin Verlander’s agent, Mark Pieperto explore the possibility of bringing the 42-year-old pitcher back for the 2025 season. Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winnerhad an injury-plagued 2024 season, but his illustrious career keeps him in the conversation for a return to Houston.

Astros begin discussions in offseason

The Astros’ general manager, Dana Brownconfirmed the conversations on the ESPN podcast Baseball Tonight:

“We had discussions with his agent to sound him out a bit. I don’t know if there has been much progress, but we are having discussions.”

Verlander’s 2024 season was far from his best. He posted a record of 5-6 with one 5,48 ERA over 90.1 innings – the lowest regular season total of his career, excluding the shortened 2020 season. Plagued by Shoulder and neck injuries Verlander admitted to rushing his return in September, which further affected his performance.

Despite these difficulties, Verlander remains one of the most successful pitchers in MLB history, leading all active players in innings pitched (3,415.2), wins (262) and starts (526) an.

Verlander’s Value: Risk vs. Reward

At 42 years old, Verlander isn’t expected to get another huge contract like his two-year, $86.7 million deal with the Mets in 2023. Still, his career longevity and track record could appeal to teams looking to have a comeback year.

Statcast metrics from 2023 showed encouraging signs as Verlander’s Chase rate, walk rate and average fastball velocity (94.3 mph) all were above average. Additionally, his reputation as a fierce competitor and leader in the clubhouse could tip the scales for interested teams.

The Houston Perspective

The Astros, who won the AL West in 2024 without significant contributions from Verlander, still value his history with the franchise. Verlander played a crucial role in theirs World Series titles in 2017 and 2022 and won two Cy Young Awards (2019, 2022) during his time in Houston.

GM Dana Brown expressed his admiration:

“JV had an incredible career here in Houston. He did so many good things here.”

What’s next for Verlander?

Verlander’s injuries in 2024 highlight the risks of signing an aging pitcher, but his potential as a veteran pitcher could interest other teams besides Houston. His future contract — likely a short-term, performance-based deal — will depend on whether teams focus on his struggles in 2024 or his Hall of Fame-worthy career.

For now, the Astros are keeping the door open for a possible comeback as Verlander weighs his options for his 20th MLB season.
