Southampton-Liverpool (2-3): the Reds fly into the Premier League with an eight-point lead over City

The day after Manchester City’s new defeat, the fifth in a row, against Tottenham (0-4), Liverpool had the opportunity to take an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League. In the match of extremes at bottom side Southampton (1 victory, 1 draw, 9 defeats), the leader did not let it pass (3-2 final score). But Arne Slot’s players did not experience the walk in the park that their excellent start had suggested. After an hour of play, Liverpool found themselves trailing (2-1).

The first half hour had however given the illusion of a lone rider for Liverpool, ultra-dominant. After several saves, notably on attempts by Mohamed Salah (4th, 21st), goalkeeper Alex McCarthy had to lose to a nice strike from Dominik Szoboszlai (0-1, 30th), author of his first goal in the Premier League this season.

A logical opener, but this goal brought down the Reds with relative ease and woke up Southampton. The Saints obtain a penalty, transformed into two stages by Adam Armstrong (1-1, 43rd). And on a counter initiated by Tyler Dibling (18 years old), Mateus Fernandes, brought the whole St Mary’s Stadium to its feet by deceiving Caoimhin Kelleher for the second time (2-1, 58th). The feeling is on.

Mohamed Salah’s double

But on a failed exit from McCarthy, Salah manages to equalize (2-2, 65th). After this goal, Liverpool asphyxiated Southampton, cornered in defense. Under pressure, Japanese international Yukinari Sugawara touches the ball with his hand in the area. The indisputable penalty is transformed by Salah (83rd). With this double, the Egyptian, who has scored in the last five Premier League matches, brings his total to 10 goals.

Liverpool were not completely sovereign throughout the match against an opponent who was limited but who put all their heart into it. But with now 8 points ahead of Manchester City and nine points ahead of Chelsea and Arsenal, Arne Slot’s players have plenty to see ahead. They will now experience an exciting week with the reception of Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday, then Manchester City next Sunday during the 13th day of the Premier League. A clash between the first two with the appearance of a small final, to try to take an 11-point lead at the top of the championship.
