Jannik Sinner is approaching a unique tennis milestone that only Roger Federer has achieved
The Italian Jannik Sinner is only one step away from reaching a unique milestone. The 23-year-old is already considered the best player currently playing in the singles category of men’s tennis.
Sinner is having a fabulous season, which is why he is sure that he will be number one in men’s tennis in 2024, with a difference of more than 3000 points. The Innichen native is only one step away from reaching a unique milestone. His last match this season in the singles category will be in the Davis Cup against Australian Tallon Griekspoor.
If Sinner manages to avoid a one-set defeat in this encounter, he will become only the second player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles category in the Open era to not lose a single match in one set for an entire season . The only other player to achieve this was former world number one Roger Federer in 2005. The reigning world number one finished the season with three major titles to his name.
His first major tournament in 2024 was the Australian Open, where he defeated Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final in a five-set thriller 3:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:4, 6:3. He then won the US Open after defeating American Taylor Fritz in the final in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Sinner’s last major tournament triumph in 2024 was the ATP final, where he defeated Fritz again in straight sets 6:4, 6:4 in the final. Sinner became world number one during the French Open this year when former world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia had to withdraw from the competition due to a knee injury shortly before the start of the quarterfinals against Norway’s Casper Ruud.
