Football returns to Mestalla a month after the DANA tragedy

The Mestalla stadium was once again filled with football and emotion this Saturday, November 23, almost a month after the DANA that especially hit the Valencian Community on October 29 left a tragic toll of 221 dead, becoming the largest catastrophe natural of the recent history of Spain. The match between Valencia and Betis, corresponding to matchday 14 of La Liga, marked the return of professional sports to this iconic stadium since the match on October 21 against Las Palmas (2-3).

The day was full of emotion and solemnity. Both players and fans could not hold back their tears as they remembered the victims. The stadium paid tribute with the display of a giant flag, the colors of the Valencian Community on the graduates, and a black crepe as a symbol of mourning.

Among the most impressive initiatives, a black banner stood out in the stands that read “Amunts Valencians”, accompanied by a list of all the towns affected by the tragedy. Dozens of volunteers and children from sports schools belonging to the affected municipalities jumped onto the grass to represent the strength of the community.

The tribute included a performance by local singer Rei Ortolá, who performed Voces de Valencia, followed by the regional anthem, accompanied by dolçaina and tabalet, traditional Valencian instruments. The event culminated with a minute of silence that was respected with deep appreciation.

In sports, Valencia beat Betis with a resounding 4-2, led by a double from Hugo Duro, who also scored an own goal. Those led by Rubén Baraja achieved a victory that allows them to climb two positions in the standings, leaving them just two points away from salvation, which Las Palmas currently holds with 12 units.
