After the victories in the mixed team event and in the first individual competition, Pius Paschke sets another exclamation mark. He only has to admit defeat to one Austrian in the driving snow.
Ski jumper Pius Paschke rounded off his outstanding World Cup start in Lillehammer with another podium finish. The 34-year-old came second in heavy snowfall and correspondingly difficult conditions, making him once again the best athlete in the German men’s team. The Austrian Jan Hörl secured victory in the second individual competition on the large hill in Norway, while his compatriot Daniel Tschofenig landed in third place.
It was a “really cool competition,” said Paschke at the ARD microphone. “It’s a bit like in the movies, but I’m getting used to it. I could go to the award ceremony every week because of me,” said the WSV Kiefersfelden athlete with a smile.
Wellinger also in the top ten
Paschke’s teammate Andreas Wellinger, second in the Four Hills Tournament and third in the overall World Cup last season, also reached the top ten in seventh place. World Cup returnee Markus Eisenbichler did not make it into the second round in 32nd place.
Paschke was the big surprise of the opening weekend in Lillehammer. On Friday he triumphed with the German selection in the mixed team event and on Saturday he won the first of the two individual competitions. “He really scored,” said national coach Stefan Horngacher about the veteran. In general, the start to the season was successful and the team was “on the right track,” said the coach.
