Italy, growing world tennis power

Italy, growing world tennis power

There was a slight doubt as to whether Italy would be able to revalidate the Davis Cup achieved last year and it had its own name: Spain, which with Rafa Nadal’s announced last tournament and its status as host, presented itself with title ambitions.

However, the surprising Netherlands squad was in charge of accelerating Nadal’s goodbye, shortly after becoming a finalist against Italy in the Silver Salad Bowl dispute.

After also beating Germany, the Dutch team arrived last night wanting to stand up to Sinner’s band, but there was not the slightest chance of success.

First at the José María Martín Carpena Sports Palace in Málaga, Andalusia, southern Spain, Matteo Berrettini overtook Italy by beating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2.

Then, Sinner arrived, the undisputed number one in the world, who overcame the resistance of Tallon Griekspoor (7-6 (2), 6-2), to put up definitive numbers and make it 2-0 for the country of the Boot.

The Italians thus completed an impeccable season, in addition to the definitive elevation of Sinner, and the consolidation as a rising figure of Jasmine Paolini, essential in her country’s victory in the Billie Jean King Cup, also held in Malaga.

Italy won its third Davis Cup (along with those of 1976 and 2023), and its fifth BJK Cup (2006, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2024).

As for Davis, it became the first country to successfully defend its title since the Czech Republic did so in 2013, having just won in 2012.

On the other hand, the transalpine representation of tennis stood on the podium of those chosen in this sport. It is now the fifth country to win the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King titles (previously called the Federation Cup) in the same year.

Although at the moment Sinner seems at a very high level, he has Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti, also young and with interesting careers.
