Ehe Raoul Fournier Auditorium, of the Faculty of Medicine, was the setting where the University Sports Award was presented, equivalent to the State Sports Award granted by the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), as well as the Fair Play Recognition and the Puma Award, all for this year 2024.
The presidium was headed by Sonia Venegas Álvarez, director of the Faculty of Law, and Alejandro Fernández Varela Jiménez, head of the General Directorate of University Sports (DGDU).
“UNAM is a sporting benchmark at the national and international level, not only for our sporting achievements, but also for its commitment to the values inherent to gender equality, fair play, and the development of specialized human resources. We strengthened the regularization of sports associations and now there are 55 in total, as well as 98 disciplines that are practiced every day at the National University,” said Fernández Varela Jiménez.
Both university directors were accompanied by Carlos Andrés García y Moreno, coordinator of Community Services of the Faculty of Medicine; Viridiana Parra Marín, student at the Faculty of Medicine and para-athletics practitioner; Yvonne Dávalos Dunning, coordinator of Outreach and Projects for Youth of the Magazine of the University of Mexico; David Vázquez Licona, director of Social Communication of the DGDU; Maximiliano Aguilar Salazar, director of Representative Sports of the DGDU, and Julio Raygosa Olivares, table tennis coach, winner of the Fair Play recognition in the coach category.
Regarding the 2024 University Sports Award, the winners are: in the student-athlete category, the aforementioned Viridiana Parra, and Monserrat Hernández Molina, from the Faculty of Law, and aerobic gymnastics athlete; as coach, Alejandrina Zamora, head coach of adapted sports, and Omar López Cámara, head badminton coach; and in the category of promotion, protection and promotion of university sports, Miguel Ángel Ramírez Hernández, physical activation promoter of the DGDU.
“This award means growth, it is a recognition of four years of effort, discipline and perseverance. I am very grateful and it is an impulse to continue improving. Dealing with an academic career and a disability is complicated, and sport for me has been that key piece that has helped me show myself that I can continue giving more,” said Viridiana Parra.
In the same ceremony, the 2024 Fair Play Recognition was awarded, which dignifies student athletes, sports teams and coaches who carry as a banner various values in favor of fair competitions, without doping, without rigging or exclusions, and signified by equity. gender, solidarity and pride in belonging to UNAM.
The 2024 Fair Play winners are, in the representative team category, the kickboxing team; as a student-athlete, Aranza Sánchez Segovia, from the Faculty of Architecture, and an adapted sport athlete in court tennis, and as a coach, Julio Raygosa, in table tennis.
“To the winners, receive recognition from the rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, and to the coaches we highlight your dedication, thank you for being guides, mentors, and for sharing the vision that sport is not only physical activity but also a means to form better Mexicans,” expressed Alejandro Fernández Varela Jiménez.
The Puma Award was also awarded to the best student-athletes, with a total of 69 disciplines awarded.
