Sebastian Vettel’s love of nature is well known. Even during his active days, he devoted himself to topics such as sustainability and climate protection. Two years after leaving Formula 1, the 37-year-old now wants to become a farmer.
Sebastian Vettel has seen a lot of asphalt in his life so far. He competed in 300 races in Formula 1. In view of these numbers, Vettel himself probably realized that as a Formula 1 driver he was also part of the problem, as he admitted in an interview with Greenpeace. During his active career, he began to rethink climate change and sustainability. He would rather be part of the solution.
Two weeks ago he collected rubbish from the streets on the sidelines of the Grand Prix in São Paulo. In 2023 he set up eleven large insect hotels at the Suzuka race track. His “Race without Trace” campaign also addresses sustainability in motorsport.
Since retiring from the premier class of motorsport at the end of 2022, Vettel has more time for his interests – and the opportunity to go back to school. “I’m doing a little training in the field of agriculture,” revealed the four-time Formula 1 world champion at an awards ceremony in Braunschweig at the weekend. It’s not full-time and will take a while.
Love for nature
Vettel explained that he somehow fell into agriculture. He is fascinated by where the products come from, the appreciation and value chain, and also the potential in agriculture. “I find it extremely exciting when it comes to the future of agriculture” and what potential it has with a view to the climate and its changes and challenges.
If he had a degree, he “wouldn’t be quite” a farmer. “But it’s practically a condensed form of it. And if I pass, I would be suitable to run my own business,” explained Vettel. According to Swiss media reports, the 37-year-old is completing his training at the Pfäffikon vocational training center. He has lived with his family in a farmhouse in Switzerland for many years.
Vettel named “Personality of the Year”.
On Saturday he received the LupoLeo Award from the United Kids Foundations, which is given to projects and people who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to a healthy future for our children and our planet. “If I win a race, I end up on top. This award is something completely different. I’m really touched. You can’t classify it that way. “So in a way it means a lot more to me,” said Vettel about the award.
