Today, on the occasion of Day international for the elimination of violence against them donnestarting from 10.30 am at the Agora of the Regional Council of Puglia, a series of events to combat gender violence will take place. The initiatives are organized by the Presidency of the Regional Council with the Welfare Department, the Sport for All Department, the Department of the Gender Policies section of the Regional Council and the Regional Women’s Council.

The initiatives

The morning will start with the inauguration of the photographic exhibition “Train yourself against violence”, the final event of the communication and awareness campaign on the phenomenon of violence aimed at the world of sport.
This is the final event of the campaign which lasted two years of activity with the Apulian anti-violence centers present in almost a hundred sports competitions, held throughout the regional territory. The photographic exhibition returns some fragments of the great collective effort made by Cav and sports organizations to give life to the many great events branded “Allénati contro la violence”
Present at the inauguration will be Roberta Chyurlia, a native of Puglia, the first female referee at the Olympics (for the Judo Sector – Fijlkam: Italian Judo Wrestling, Karate and Martial Arts Federation) Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. After the inauguration of the exhibition, the meeting with anti-violence centers and centers for men perpetrators of violence (Cuav), a moment of discussion on the actions and strategies that the Regional Council and the Region Puglia intend to adopt to address the issue both from the point of view of prevention and support for victims.

The proposed law

The Regional Council in the 2024 budget, on the proposal of President Loredana Capone, has allocated 400 thousand euros for the fight against gender violence with the implementation of specific training and specialization courses for law enforcement officers, judges, lawyers, doctors, teachers and students. The Presidency of the Council is working to prepare an implementation project. This will also be the opportunity to present the new programming and the macro-lines of intervention in support of the regional anti-violence network, currently underway, including: support for the functioning of the anti-violence centres, with their widespread network and proximity of listening points , and level I and II shelter homes that welcome women in times of greatest difficulty and in the process of recovering their autonomy; the gift for empowerment reserved for women taken care of by Apulian anti-violence centres, supported on the path towards autonomy thanks to housing support measures, job reintegration and more generally accompaniment on the path to escape from violence; Support for the network of Centers for men who are perpetrators of violence. The event will be attended by Loredana Capone, president of the regional council; Serena Triggiani, regional councilor for gender policies; Vera Guelfi, president of the regional women’s council; Valentina Romano manager of the Welfare Department; the management of the Health and Sports Department; Lella Ruccia, regional equality councilor. Moderated by Tiziana Di Cosmo, director of the Gender Policies Section of the Regional Council.
At the end of the works there will be a donation of the work “Penelope’s Scream” by the InOltre association to the Regional Council. It is a portrait of Penelope in calligraphy art created with the names of the victims of feminicide since 2000, a technique used by the artist Francesca Grosso to preserve their memory.
