MANAGUA, NICARAGUA.- Captain Víctor Liz led the offensive of the national senior basketball team that easily defeated Nicaragua 89-73 this Sunday night, a match corresponding to the Second Qualifying Window for AmeriCup 2025.
Liz scored 19 points to be the offensive leader of the Quisqueyan team that achieved its victory, with two setbacks, and is in second position in group C, with the same record as Mexico, which also lost this Sunday against the leaders of Canada (4 -0), 83-73.
The match was played at the Alexis Argüello sports center, in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua.
Along with Liz, his Santiago native Omar Silverio stood out with 14 points and five rebounds, Jassel Pérez contributed 13 points plus five assists, Eloy Vargas had a 10-digit double-double with 10 caught balls, Steven Verplancken and Antonio Peña eight each.
For the Nicaraguans, Josmel Martínez scored 21 points with nine rebounds, Francisco Garth managed to score 15, catch eight balls and distribute another four, and Ponce Furgeson 10 points.
Upcoming matches
The national team will play in the Third AmeriCup 2025 Qualifying Window on Friday, February 21, 2025 against Canada, and Monday the 24th with Nicaragua, in the Dominican Republic.
The FIBA AmeriCup 2025 will be played in the city of Managua, Nicaragua, at the Alexis Argüello sports center, from August 22 to 31, 2025.
In the qualifying windows, each team will play against each opponent in its group twice under the home and away format in three windows, in which the first two were held in February and this one in November, and the third will be played in February 2025.
Nicaragua, as host, is already qualified for the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 and the remaining two best teams in group C (Canada, Dominican Republic and Mexico) will fight for the other two places.
Likewise, of the total of 16 participating teams, the three best in group A (Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela); group B (Brazil, Panama, Paraguay and Uruguay); and group D (Bahamas, Cuba, United States and Puerto Rico) to be 12 who will qualify for the event.
