“If Mads is open to it, then we have to do it”

“If Mads is open to it, then we have to do it”
Mads Pedersen has long been one of the most feared and well-known riders in the peloton. Looking for a big monument victory in 2025, the Danish LIDL Trek leader could finally complete an extended high altitude camp after avoiding it for so long… ?
“Mads himself has said publicly that he doesn’t want to, even if his coach says he has to,” laughs the former world champion’s coach Mattias Reck, in quotes collected by Ekstra Bladet. “But it’s something we’re talking about. I’m sure we’ll do a proper altitude training camp at some point,” he adds.

As previously mentioned, Pedersen has been very opposed to the idea of going high as he doesn’t think it will benefit him. However, as Reck says, for the sake of experimentation, it might finally be time to give it a real try. “Mads said ‘OK, we’ll try it at some point’. But the reason I didn’t push for it so much is because I have my doubts about how much it will achieve,” Reck admits honestly. “Riders react very differently to altitude training camps.”

“If Mads is open to it then we have to do it. Because we haven’t explored it yet and if it just makes him lose an extra pound then maybe it will help, but I’m not sure so I don’t want to risk anything.” , says the trainer finally. “So it will happen at some point, but I don’t know when or in which year,” he concludes.

It was previously revealed that Pedersen is targeting the Classics and Monuments in 2025, aiming for a big spring and potentially a first Monument win for the 28-year-old. It remains to be seen whether a trip to the heights will prove to be a crucial step in his journey.
